On 10–11 July, the Asian Population and Development Association (APDA; Secretariat of JPFP), in cooperation with the Uganda Parliamentary Forum on Food Security, Population and Development (UPFFSP&D), co-organized an orientation meeting on population and development issues in Kampala, Uganda, for Members of the 12th Parliament, elected in January this year. The meeting was held in conjunction with World Population Day on 11 July. A total of 52 parliamentarians and representatives of partner organizations attended the meeting.

During the meeting, presentations were given on Uganda’s population dynamics, demographic dividend, youth employment, sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), maternal and child health, and food security. Parliamentarians discussed the need to strengthen inter-ministerial coordination in implementing policies these fields and the need to provide support for young people and women.
An Interim Executive Committee was also established at UPFFSP&D to promote its activities, and key actions for the future were identified including proposed submission for policy recommendations and collaboration with other stakeholders. On 11 July, the Forum conducted a field visit to Bukungu Parish in the Mukono County North Constituency, Mukono District. The delegation met with older persons living with disabilities, and their families and caregivers to exchange views on challenges faced by vulnerable communities.

This programme was supported by the Japan Trust Fund (JTF), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF).
