ABOUT APDA

The Asian Population and Development Association (APDA) was established in 1982 and has since been working toward fulfilling its mission to address population and development issues and build a sustainable society where every person can live with dignity.

In the finite nature of the earth's resources, population stabilization is one of the prerequisites for achieving sustainable development and addressing immediate concerns such as climate change, water and food shortages and poverty. To address these issues, parliamentarians can act as a medium between the society and government, institute legal systems and mobilize resources to this end. By promoting parliamentary movement and networking and transferring Japanese experience and expertise to other Asian countries, remarkable progress in this region during the past 25 years is evident in that the Total Fertility Rate (TFR) declined from 4.0 in 1982 to the present rate of 2.5.

APDA, as the Japan Parliamentarians Federation for Population (JPFP) secretariat, has been developing its activities to the ever-diversifying population and development issues in Asia and Japan and elsewhere, in close cooperation with UN agencies, parliamentary organizations throughout the world, the Japanese government, international/local NGOs and other related organizations. As such, it makes a unique contribution to population and development.
